Charles McConnell

Inducted 2002

Charles McConnell's distinguished career in sports officiating and administration was celebrated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2002, honoring his impressive tenure and contributions primarily as an official. Born on March 5, 1933, McConnell embarked on a journey with the TSSAA that would span over four decades, beginning in 1964 and continuing beyond his hall of fame induction.

Throughout his 37 years (and counting from the time of his induction) as a TSSAA official, McConnell made significant marks in both football and basketball at the high school level. In football, his expertise and fairness as an official were showcased in numerous playoffs and notably in two TSSAA State Championship games, a testament to his skill and respect within the athletic community. McConnell's influence extended onto the basketball court as well, where he officiated in district, regional, and sub-state games, contributing to the fabric of high school sports in Tennessee. His basketball officiating credentials were further highlighted by his participation in two TSSAA Boys' State Tournaments in 1973 and 1987, and one TSSAA Girls’ State Tournament in 1979.

In addition to his on-field roles, McConnell served as the TSSAA Supervisor for the Tri-Cities Association starting from 1966, a position he held with distinction, parallel to his officiating career. His contributions were not confined to TSSAA events alone, as he also officiated at the collegiate level, including the Ohio Valley Conference, Southeastern Conference, and the Tennessee Valley Athletic Conference.

McConnell's excellence and dedication were recognized beyond the realms of TSSAA, culminating in his induction into the Northeast Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, a precursor to his TSSAA Hall of Fame honor. Through his service, Charles McConnell not only enriched the games he officiated and oversaw but also fostered respect and integrity within the sporting community of Tennessee, making his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2002 a well-deserved celebration of his enduring legacy.
