Nick Coutras, an influential figure in the realm of high school athletics, embarked on his coaching career in 1957 and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sports and education until his retirement in 1985. His journey began at Hillsboro High School, where he served as an assistant football coach before taking the helm of the basketball program from 1959 to 1965. Coutras' career took a new turn when he moved to McMurray Junior High School in 1965, where he coached football and track & field until 1969.

The most significant chapter of Coutras' career unfolded at John Overton High School, where he coached from 1969 to 1985. His teams celebrated 40 consecutive regular-season victories over four years, clinched six region titles, participated in seven bowl games, and notably, won the TSSAA AAA State Football Championship in 1981.

Beyond his coaching accolades, Coutras' service to the TSSAA was highlighted by his role in coaching the 1973 TSSAA Football All-Stars. His legacy continues to resonate within the community through the "Nick Coutras Stadium" at John Overton High School and the establishment of the Nick Coutras Award, which honors a high school football player from Middle Tennessee who embodies dedication to team, academic excellence, and community service.

In recognition of his illustrious career and significant contributions to high school sports, Coutras was posthumously inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2002, a year before his death.
