Leo Martindale, born on December 26, 1927, led an illustrious career both on and off the sports field before his death on March 7, 2003. His contributions to athletics, particularly within the realm of officiating, were honored with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1992. Martindale's relationship with the TSSAA spanned 33 years, starting in 1951 and continuing until 1984. During this tenure, he officiated at four TSSAA State Football Championships and eight TSSAA State Basketball Tournaments, in addition to being involved in several TSSAA Football Bowl games and TSSAA All-Star Basketball games. His dedication to school sports extended beyond his rookie season, ensuring he worked a district and regional tournament game in basketball every subsequent year.

Beyond his contributions to the TSSAA, Martindale's officiating career was notable for its breadth and depth. His expertise in football led him to officiate in the Ohio Valley Conference for over 20 years, and he was assigned by the NCAA to work four post-season playoff games, including the esteemed 1986 NCAA Division III National Championship at the Stagg Bowl. His leadership and experience were recognized when he served as the past President of the Ohio Valley Conference Football Officials’ Association.

Before his extensive officiating career, Martindale showcased his athletic prowess by playing football at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and later, transitioning into professional baseball within the Pittsburgh Pirate organization in Dothan, Alabama. Beyond sports, he was committed to serving his community, evidenced by his tenure of 10 years each on the Jackson City Council and the Madison County Commission. Martindale's multifaceted career and service to the TSSAA were instrumental in earning him a rightful place in the TSSAA Hall of Fame, celebrating a legacy that touched various facets of athletics and public service.
