Fred Baker

Inducted 1992

Fred Baker's distinguished and diverse career in sports officiating, marked by his profound contribution and unwavering dedication, culminated in a well-deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1992. Born on May 18, 1925, Baker's journey in the realm of sports officiating began unexpectedly in 1947 when, as a student at Union University, he was called from the stands to officiate a game between Union University and Delta State University due to the absence of an official. This serendipitous start foreshadowed a remarkable career that spanned over four decades.

For 40 years, from 1947 to 1987, Baker significantly contributed to high school sports in Tennessee as a TSSAA official. His dedication extended beyond the playing fields as he assumed the role of Assigning Officer and Supervisor of the West Tennessee Basketball Officials’ Association for 10 years, from 1987 to 1997. Throughout his tenure, Baker's expertise was not confined to one sport; he worked in TSSAA State Basketball tournaments for both boys and girls, officiated TSSAA State Football Playoffs, and spent 12 years as an official in the Southeastern Conference, from 1962 to 1974.

Baker's talents were recognized beyond the TSSAA; he was a top official in the old Volunteer State Athletic Conference (VSAC) and received the prestigious "Charlie Meeks Award" for outstanding officiating. His alma mater, Union University, where he participated in basketball and baseball, saw one of its own honored not only within sports officiating circles but also with his induction into the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

Fred Baker's illustrious career, defined by dedication, expertise, and integrity, left a lasting legacy within the TSSAA and the broader sports officiating community. His 1992 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame is a testament to his significant contributions and service to high school sports in Tennessee.
