Robert Gaither

Inducted 1999

Robert Coy "Pistol" Gaither, who was born on April 10, 1908, and passed away on October 2, 1960, had a distinguished career as an official with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Starting in 1928, Gaither dedicated nearly three decades of his life to officiating TSSAA events until 1957, showcasing his deep commitment to high school sports in Tennessee. During his tenure as an official, Gaither was known for officiating basketball games at a time when only one official was responsible for managing the entire game, a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. He became the second individual ever to be licensed as a TSSAA official, a landmark achievement facilitated by Mr. J. C. Taylor.

Gaither's contributions to high school athletics were extensive, including officiating numerous district and regional games. His dedication did not go unnoticed by the TSSAA. In 1953, in recognition of over 25 years of officiating service, the TSSAA honored him with a gold pin, an award presented by then TSSAA Executive Secretary A. F. Bridges. Throughout his career, Gaither also received certificates for 15 and 20 years of officiating service from the TSSAA, marking significant milestones in his long-standing involvement with high school sports. Beyond his on-field contributions, Gaither served as the Supervisor of Officials for the Central Tennessee High School Conference for two years, from 1958 until his death in 1960, further underscoring his leadership within the TSSAA community.

In 1999, Robert Gaither's remarkable contributions and service were celebrated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy within Tennessee's high school athletic community.
