Harry Beamon

Inducted 2005

Harry Beamon, born on June 13, 1942, embarked on a distinguished career in sports officiating, culminating in his 2005 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Beamon’s journey began in the Black High School Officials Association, where he served from 1960 to 1967, officiating in basketball and football, marking the onset of a lifelong commitment to high school sports.

In 1964, Beamon became an affiliate member of the TSSAA, a relationship that would shape his career and the organization itself for years to come. His tenure as a TSSAA basketball official spanned 24 years, from 1967 to 1991. During this period, Beamon officiated at pivotal events, including the TSSAA Boys State Tournament in 1971, the TSSAA Girls State Tournament in 1983, and numerous district and regional tournaments from 1970 through 1991. His contributions were not limited to high school basketball; he also made significant marks in football officiating.

Beamon’s career was marked by groundbreaking achievements. He was part of the first group of black officials accepted into the ranks of TSSAA, setting a precedent that expanded opportunities for future generations. Notably, in 1971, Beamon became the first black official in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), serving until 1973.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Beamon’s legacy includes his role in mentoring young officials at Fisk University and Tennessee State University, many of whom went on to become leading officials in the TSSAA. His commitment to education extended to his service as the Commissioner of the Middle TN College Officials Association from 1980 to 2001.

Retiring from active officiating in 1991, Beamon continued to influence the world of sports officiating through his involvement in TSSAA, OVC, and other officiating camps. He left an indelible mark on the TSSAA and sports officiating in Tennessee, contributing significantly to the professionalism and diversity within the field until his passing on August 30, 2006. Harry Beamon's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2005 was a fitting tribute to a career dedicated to excellence, mentorship, and breaking down barriers in sports officiating.
