V. F. Goddard

Inducted 2015

  •  Superintendent of Alcoa Schools for 33 years (1924 – 1957)

  • Began career as Superintendent of Schools in Michigan and Dakota (1913 – 1924)

  • Served on the TSSAA Board of Control for 23 years (1935 – 1957)

  • President of TSSAA Board of Control from 1950 - 1957

  • Member of the Tennessee General Assembly (82nd – 84th General Assembly) from 1961 – 1967

  • Hired two fellow TSSAA Hall of Famers as teachers and coaches at Alcoa High School (William H. Bailey and Vernon Osbourne)

  • Very instrumental in the hiring of the first TSSAA Executive Director, Mr. A. F. Bridges

  • Helped create the football program at Alcoa High School in 1924

  • Alcoa High School football field is named “V. F. Goddard Field” in his honor

  • Oversaw completion of Hall School and Springbrook Gymnasium in Alcoa

  • Published articles in the TN Education Survey including “Objectives of Secondary Education” and “Administration of Education in Local Units” (1935)

  • Published article in Tennessee Teacher including “Metal for Industrial Art Classes” (1938)

  • Published article in East TN Council Research Bulletin including “Improvement Program for Reading in Grammar Grades” (1945)

  • Guest lecturer of George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee (1936)

  • Doctor of Pedagogy degree from Maryville College in 1953
