      • On January 29, 1988, the Harriman High School Gymnasium was dedicated as the Richard D. Pickell Gymnasium
      • Member of 1958 Lenoir City High School State Championship team, which was coached by fellow TSSAA Hall of Famer Elvin Little
      • Inducted into the Lenoir City High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2004
      • The 2008 Boys State Basketball tournament was his 40th straight year in attendance
      • Played basketball and baseball at Tennessee Wesleyan College
      • Received the East Tennessee Coach of the Year Award in 1995 presented by the Knoxville News-Sentinel
      • Named Tennessee Coach of the Year in 1995 by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association
