James H. Reed, born on February 18, 1940, made an indelible mark in the world of high school sports officiating, culminating in his 2017 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His career was characterized by dedication, longevity, and excellence, spanning across several decades and multiple sports disciplines.

Reed began his journey as a TSSAA official and remained active in this role for over 50 years. His proficiency as an official was most notable in basketball, where he devoted over 40 years, demonstrating an unparalleled commitment to the sport and its development at the high school level in Tennessee. His exemplary officiating skills earned him the honor of working three TSSAA State tournaments, highlighting the peak of high school basketball competitiveness in the state. Notably, Reed officiated the 1982 Girls’ State Basketball tournament and contributed to the success of the 1984 and 1985 Boys' State tournaments, showcasing his versatile officiating capabilities.

Reed's influence extended beyond the state tournaments; he was a fixture in nearly 30 sub-state contests, and his presence was felt across 35 regional tournaments and 36 district tournaments. His dedication was not limited to basketball alone; Reed also made significant contributions to baseball, umpiring for more than 30 years, which included officiating one TSSAA State Baseball tournament, 19 sub-state games, 21 regionals, and 24 district tournaments.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Reed was a valued member of the South Central Basketball Officials’ Association. Following his retirement in 2005, he continued to serve the community and the TSSAA by taking on the role of an At-large supervisor. This appointment underlined his enduring commitment and service to high school sports in Tennessee, affirming his legacy as a mentor and leader in the officiating community.
