Lee Pate

Inducted 1997

Lee Pate, born on November 23, 1910, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sports and education throughout his remarkable career. His journey in athletics and mentorship spanned several decades, beginning in 1942 and concluding in 1974. Pate's tenure as a teacher and coach at Bradley Central High School marked the early stages of his career from 1942 to 1943 and again from 1946 to 1947, after a brief hiatus. His role then expanded when he moved to Murfreesboro Central High School, where he served from 1947 until 1972, before finally taking up a position at Murfreesboro Oakland High School from 1972 to 1974.

Pate's coaching legacy is distinguished by his exceptional achievements in both football and basketball. In football, he amassed a commendable record of 155 wins, 91 losses, and 10 ties. However, it was on the basketball court where Pate's coaching acumen truly shined. Under his guidance, his teams achieved a stellar record of 524 wins against only 115 losses. His leadership led to 20 District Titles, two Unit 3 Championships, nine Region Titles, and nine coveted TSSAA State Tournament appearances. Among these accolades were a TSSAA State Championship in 1965 with an undefeated record of 32-0, a State Runner-Up title in 1963, and third-place finishes in the State Tournament in both 1960 and 1971.

Aside from his on-field achievements, Lee Pate played a pivotal role in fostering athletic talent and was a respected figure in his community, embodying the values of honesty, integrity, and citizenship. His contribution to sports and the development of young athletes was profound, leaving a legacy that extended far beyond the playing fields. This distinguished career and dedicated service to the TSSAA were fittingly recognized in 1997 when Lee Pate was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, cementing his place among Tennessee’s athletic elite. His passing on January 8, 1999, marked the end of an era, but his influence on high school athletics in Tennessee continues to be felt.
