James "Doc" Simpson, whose career spanned various roles in education and sports, was posthumously inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1988, celebrated for his contributions as an administrator. Born on August 8, 1934, Simpson's journey in athletics and education concluded with his passing on February 3, 1987, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication and leadership.

Simpson's professional path began in teaching and coaching, making significant impacts at Pack Junior High School, Knoxville South High School, Knoxville East High School, and Knoxville Holston High School. His career evolved as he took on administrative roles, serving as assistant principal at Rule High School from 1971 to 1975. Simpson's leadership skills were further recognized when he became the principal of Knoxville West High School, a position he held for 11 years until 1986.

In addition to his administrative duties, Simpson was deeply involved with the TSSAA, contributing as an official for regional, district, and state basketball tournament games. His commitment to sports extended beyond the school level; he officiated collegiate games for the Southeastern Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, and Knoxville area schools. From 1977 to 1985, Simpson served on the TSSAA Board of Control, displaying exemplary leadership and vision for high school athletics in Tennessee. His stewardship in sports was also evident during his nine-year presidency of the Knoxville Basketball Officials’ Association from 1976 to 1985.

Simpson's final service to the TSSAA was as a basketball supervisor in 1986, capping a year that embodied his lifelong dedication to enhancing high school athletics. His contributions extended beyond TSSAA as he presided over the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP), further showcasing his commitment to the broader educational community.

Recognizing his impact, a scholarship was named in Simpson's memory, ensuring his legacy would continue to inspire future generations. James "Doc" Simpson's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1988 affirmed his lasting influence on Tennessee high school sports and education.
