Inducted 1998

Richard Ross was a dedicated teacher and coach whose commitment to student-athletes spanned over three decades, culminating in a revered induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1998. Born on March 10, 1932, Ross embarked on his educational and coaching career in 1955, touching the lives of many until his passing on July 31, 1993.

Ross’s illustrious coaching tenure began at Haywood High School, where he served from 1955 to 1966. His journey in shaping young athletes continued at Jackson High School from 1966 to 1970, where his leadership as a football coach was marked by an impressive 25-7 record, including two Big Ten Conference Championships. Ross’s commitment to excellence and development of his players did not go unnoticed.

In 1970, he moved to Jackson Central-Merry, where he would leave a profound mark until 1985. During his time there, Ross again demonstrated his exceptional coaching abilities, achieving a remarkable football record of 112-38. Under his guidance, the team reached the TSSAA State Tournament twice as runners-up, showcasing their competitive spirit and Ross's coaching acumen.

Beyond his tenure in Tennessee, Ross also contributed to the athletic program at Murray High School in Kentucky from 1986 to 1989, where he continued his passion for coaching football alongside fellow Hall of Fame member Jack Cain.

Through his influential career, Ross not only served as an assistant coach under other TSSAA Hall of Fame members, including John Hooper and Tom Fann, but also played football and basketball at Union University in Jackson, TN. His broad impact on sports was further recognized by his induction into the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Paris-Henry County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

Richard Ross’s legacy as a coach who profoundly influenced his players and the communities he served remains a testament to his remarkable career and the reason for his well-deserved 1998 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
