R. L. "Buddy" Patey, born on February 7, 1926, carved a significant niche for himself in the world of sports officiating—a journey recognized by his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1986. Patey's storied career as a TSSAA official spanned over 56 years, starting in 1948, marking him as a venerable figure within the Tennessee sports community. Throughout his career, he officiated over 800 high school games, 17 high school bowl games, 2 TSSAA football All-Star games, and notably, 5 TSSAA football state championship games, showcasing his dedication and service to high school athletics.

In addition to his on-field contributions, Patey's involvement with TSSAA extended beyond officiating games. From 1962 to 1970, he volunteered as a TSSAA Supervisor for the Volunteer Conference for eight years, bringing his wealth of experience and knowledge to refine and enhance the quality of officiating across the state. His commitment to excellence saw him ascend to pivotal roles, such as serving as the TSSAA Commissioner and Supervisor for the Big Ten Conference for 15 years (1971-1986), a testament to his leadership and administrative capabilities.

Moreover, from 1984 to 2000, Patey took on the significant responsibility of coordinating officiating crews for state championship games for 16 years, ensuring that the high standards he adhered to were reflected throughout the association. His long-term commitment was further solidified as he functioned as a TSSAA Supervisor-at-Large for 19 years, starting from his Hall of Fame induction year in 1986.

Patey's influence and dedication to the development of sports officiating also led him to author "The Illustrated Rules of Football," an instructional children’s book initiated by TSSAA administration and endorsed by the NFHS. This work reflected his desire to nurture a future generation's understanding and love for the game.

R. L. "Buddy" Patey's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1986 was a crowning acknowledgment of his profound impact on high school sports in Tennessee. His unparalleled dedication, spanning over five decades, not only elevated the standards of sports officiating but also left an indelible mark on the TSSAA and its many athletes and supporters.
