Edwin "Ed" Black's distinguished career as a TSSAA official, spanning 25 years from 1948 to 1973, culminated in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1995, a testament to his significant contributions to high school sports in Tennessee. Born on September 16, 1922, and having served in the Marines from 1942 to 1946, Black ventured into education and sports, his passion and dedication evident in his roles as a teacher, coach, and official across various sports disciplines.

His officiating career was particularly illustrious in basketball, where his expertise and fairness were showcased in over 30 county tournaments, 25 district tournaments, 20 regional tournaments, and an impressive four TSSAA State Tournaments (1955, 1957, 1960, 1963), including both the boys’ and girls’ TSSAA State Tournaments in 1963. Beyond the court, he served as the Commissioner of Region VII Basketball Officials’ Association for five years (1968-1973) and played pivotal roles in the Reelfoot Football Officials’ Association as Commissioner, Supervisor, and Assigning Officer, displaying his leadership and organizational skills.

Before fully immersing himself in the realm of officiating, Black was a committed teacher and coach from 1946 to 1965, impacting young lives at Maury City High School, Friendship High School, and Alamo High School by coaching baseball and basketball. His coaching tenure laid the groundwork for his later contributions as an official.

In recognition of his tireless service and impact on high school athletics, Ed Black was rightfully celebrated with his inclusion into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1995. His legacy, characterized by over 3,000 officiated basketball contests and the founding of the Reelfoot Football Officials’ Association, marked a remarkable journey of dedication to TSSAA and high school sports in Tennessee. Ed Black passed away on February 24, 1987, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to youth sports and education.
